The concept

With most designs, JWA Systems uses a combination of a PC and an embedded software module, as drawn in the next diagram. This embedded software module acts as a smart controller.

With this combination, the design gets the best from both sides of the computer spectrum. A PC is a powerful, cheap, reliable and universal computing device. It is well suited for running the user interface of an application. Tasks that can be implemented in the user interface are:

• Operation of the system (bediening)
• Calibration of sensors and actuators
• Monitoring and reporting of system variables

At the other end of the spectrum, an embedded software module has its own specific advantages:

Highly adaptable to specific circumstances

Especially input and outputs are very flexible and cheap. Digital inputs, A/D converters, timers, they can be installed at no great expense. If required, interface electronics can be designed-in with little effort.




Reliability

Due to the robust constuction and the minimal number of parts, little can fail with an embedded software module. Also, embedded software is much less complex than e.g. an operating system and therefore much more reliable too.




Small footprint

Since the module is designed from scratch, dimensions can be minimized. Also the choice of enclosure can be matched with the operating environment.




Low power

With today's advances in technology, a regular module can run for months on a single battery, depending on the application.




JWA Systems develops both the PC application and the embedded software module. The biggest advantage is the seamless integration of both parts.

This concept has advantages over the more conventional modular approach. Firstly, complex systems can be developed at low cost, due to re-use of techniques. Secondly, the product will be closer to the specifications given, since everything is tailor-made.
